About this course
High-functioning clients often present with behaviors that are adaptive, socially reinforced, and outwardly successful, such as over-responsibility, perfectionistic striving, anticipatory control, or extreme self-reliance, while also reporting anxiety, exhaustion, relational strain, and difficulty disengaging.
This 3-hour clinical workshop teaches counselors a structured clinical approach to assessing the function of these patterns, developing collaborative case formulations, and selecting evidence-informed interventions that increase psychological flexibility and client choice.
Participants learn to distinguish adaptive strength from rigid protective strategy; explore meaning, conditional rules, context, and maintaining processes without premature causal attribution; and translate formulation into regulation, cognitive distancing and defusion, values-guided action, and behavioral experimentation. Established clinical constructs, differential assessment, multicultural and contextual considerations, client autonomy, and clinician judgment guide intervention throughout the training.
Proprietary Framework Disclosure This training uses the Overfunctioning Formulation Framework, a proprietary organizing structure for established clinical constructs including functional assessment, contextual behavioral analysis, and psychological flexibility. It is not a diagnostic system, a standalone treatment modality, or an independently validated intervention. Clinical judgment, differential assessment, and existing evidence-informed approaches guide all intervention decisions.
