About this course
By exploring the unique role of therapists in legal settings, this five-hour session highlights the collective strength and unity of counseling professionals when navigating complex environments. It underscores how collaboration and shared knowledge among counselors support individual members facing challenging situations, ultimately demonstrating that together, we form a resilient and unified profession. Mental health professionals are often subpoenaed to court whether they are prepared for it or not. Despite their disinterest in legal cases, the acuity of the clients and the contentiousness of their lives will often create a situation where a therapist will need to interact with a legal professional at some point in their career. The essential key topics include: • maintaining professional ethical boundaries • strategies for clear and objective communication • ethical considerations unique to the legal setting and staying within one's area of expertise. • Documentation & Record Review • Risk Management & Board Complaints
The session will also cover reviewing case notes, understand legal standards, and collaborate effectively with legal counsel. Participants will engage in practical exercises including mock questioning and role-play scenarios to build confidence and professionalism. By the end of the workshop, therapists will be equipped with actionable strategies to present their findings credibly and effectively in a legal setting.
